Imagine a man who lives a double life — a triple, quadruple even. He abandons his wife and children. He’s a drug addict. He’s found by police unconscious in a hotel surrounded by vials of drugs. He escapes their clutches by jumping out the back of an ambulance. He goes to prison — multiple times. He marries another woman months after meeting her. He plots to steal her money. He cheats, he makes threats. He scares her children. He sets her car on fire. He attacks her daughter.
In many ways, Dirty John is a return to when the crime genre was more closely aligned to melodrama, in the days before true-crime programming like American Crime Story, Making A Murderer and The Jinx became popular. The legacy of those shows has created a sensibility that fictional accounts of lurid crimes should be considered paltry in comparison to their non-fiction counterparts.Dirty John certainly doesn’t aim to be a high-brow performance piece.
