Several new players have come onto the scene, some have moved into larger facilities and at least one of our previous Top 5 has closed.
And then there was the coronavirus outbreak. Distillers across San Antonio found doors to their tasting rooms shuttered. In an effort to fight back against COVID-19 and simply keep the lights on, many of those businesses switched from producing whiskey, rum and gin to something much stronger:While the city's distilleries have returned to making a wide range of spirits instead of corona killers, business isn't quite back to usual.
If it's been a while since you've sipped a San Antonio-produced spirit, here's our guide to the city's Top 5 distilleries.This grain-to-glass distiller relocated from its prior downtown location to a larger facility along Houston Street in the Dignowity Hill neighborhood about two years ago. While its tasting room isn't currently open, you won't have any trouble finding this distiller's product on the shelves of area liquor stores.
The flagship Black Label Bourbon has a gorgeous, deep amber hue and a powerful aroma of molasses and caramel. The bourbon is notably smooth and round upon first sip, with a taste of oak and caramelized sugar that gives way to a lingering cinnamon-like-tingling sting. This spirit makes an outstanding old fashioned, but is nice enough to sip neat. Alamo Distilling also makes a vodka that is a perfect base spirit for the home bartender.
