Karen immediately waved to a family that was swimming nearby for help as Stewart struggled against the current that was pulling him further from shore despite his vigorous efforts. “I am not sure Ryan has ever received a more vigorous hug than the one I gave him when we got to shore. I looked him in the eye and said, ‘You absolutely saved my life.'"“Ryan, you gave me back my life and, while I may be 85 years old, I am still a very healthy, active man. I have a wonderful, beautiful, enormous family, a wife, five children, 12 grandchildren, and I was within seconds of having that all yanked away from me eternally.
Ryan said both men got on their backs and kicked their feet as hard as they could until the group could get the floatation device out to them. That device had a long rope which was used to help pull the two men to shore.
