York Regional Police are taking proactive steps to address the recent surge in jewelry store robberies by offering community support and resources through a new “Traumatic Incident Response Protocol.” Teams will be stationed at local shopping centers to provide safety tips, healing activities, and distribute safety materials.
Police said they were called to the shopping centre near Sheppard Avenue and Don Mills Road in North York. Efforts are underway to support residents of York Region amid a rise in smash-and-grab robberies targeting GTA jewelry stores in recent months. In partnership with the region, York Regional Police are setting up what they’re calling “Traumatic Incident Response Protocol,” which aims to provide support and resources to the community following violent incidents in the area.
Police say these teams will set up booths at two local shopping centres this week to provide people with “healing activities and crime prevention and personal safety tips.” Safety materials and wallet cards will also be on hand.Today, officers from York Regional Police will be at Hillcrest Mall in Richmond Hill, near Carrville Road and Yonge Street, from noon to 7 p.m. as well as at CF Markville in Markham, near McCowan Road and Highway 7, on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m.Earlier this month,that while they could not provide specific statistics, there has been a rise in jewelry store robberies in the region year-over-year. Toronto police also said that so far in 2024, there had been 43 jewelry store robberies reported to police, compared to just 21 last year
