The York County commissioners passed a resolution banning open burning countywide and prohibiting fireworks unless approved by the municipality where they are being ignited for 30 days, starting Monday.
Anyone who violates the burn ban may face a maximum fine of up to $100 for the first offense, $200 for a second offense and $300 for a third and subsequent offenses.
The ban does not apply to the use of propane or gas stoves, charcoal briquette grills or use of tobacco; however, all fireworks are prohibited unless approved by the municipality where they are being ignited. The duration of the ban will be reviewed periodically over the next 30 days to determine if weather conditions are such that it can be terminated, according to the resolution.
Meanwhile, the wildfire danger is high for all but four northwestern counties: Warren, Forest, McKean and Elk where the risk is rated as moderate, according to the department.
