After two years of the pandemic, things began approaching a sense of normalcy for one reporter
When looking back at the stories I wrote this year, I was a little surprised how much of the pandemic was still prevalent in the earliest months. Many people were still wearing masks during events in January and February, but the practice definitely started to scale back after a few months.
The opioid crisis continued to make headlines in 2022, with Sault Ste. Marie experiencing a higher-than-average death rate among cities in Ontario. I tried my best to not only focus in the problems in the city, but also highlight some of the solutions. On a happier note, I was lucky enough to attend a send-off for Earl Breckenridge — a custodian who retired after 32 years working as a custodian with the Algoma District School Board. The students and staff at H.M. Robbins Public School said goodbye to him in May with song and speeches. Attending these kinds of events is pretty standard fare for a reporter, but I realized while I was in the gymnasium that I hadn't stepped foot in a school in over two years because of pandemic restrictions.
