Queen Elizabeth’s passing, unexpected reunion with old friend among highlights of the year
Though she was 96 years old, news of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 8 came quickly and as a shock to me. She had been there as a symbol of dignity and stability for so long - for all of my life - and then she was gone. I truly grieved as if I had lost a family member. Like many others, I felt that I knew her. She has been succeeded by her son but she will never be replaced. Locally, a fitting ceremony was held at the Cenotaph on the day of her funeral in London.
In December, I spoke with Elaine Barr - originally from Garden River First Nation and now living in BC - who was able to visit her terminally ill sister Linda Desautel in the Sault for a few weeks in the fall, thanks to a charity who uses donated air miles to fly people to be with their loved ones in their last days.
