Queen Elizabeth’s passing, unexpected reunion with old friend among highlights of the year

Though she was 96 years old, news of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 8 came quickly and as a shock to me. She had been there as a symbol of dignity and stability for so long - for all of my life - and then she was gone. I truly grieved as if I had lost a family member. Like many others, I felt that I knew her. She has been succeeded by her son but she will never be replaced. Locally, a fitting ceremony was held at the Cenotaph on the day of her funeral in London.

In December, I spoke with Elaine Barr - originally from Garden River First Nation and now living in BC - who was able to visit her terminally ill sister Linda Desautel in the Sault for a few weeks in the fall, thanks to a charity who uses donated air miles to fly people to be with their loved ones in their last days. Linda passed away on Dec. 13. Though I’ve spoken with officials from many charities, I think Give A Mile is an exceptionally brilliant and compassionate concept. The Sault Ste.
