Yankees right-hander Clarke Schmidt worked a career-long 6 2/3 innings in Saturday night's game against the Rays.
But Schmidt, who was a hard-luck loser while working a career-best 6 2/3 innings Saturday in the Yankees’ 3-0 loss to the Rays, persevered through the bad times while making baby steps of improvement.
Schmidt was very good in defeat again in his final August start. The 27-year-old righty held the Rays to three run, including one earned, on six hits before leaving with two outs in the seventh inning. He struck out five and didn’t walk anyone in a 99-pitch outing. That was all the Rays needed with ace Tyler Glasnow blanking the Yankees on one hit and two walks through six and Tampa Bay’s bullpen adding three scoreless innings.“It is big to create a threshold there,” manager Aaron Boone said.
“I’m sure become more of a topic as the weeks unfold,” Boone said. “Obviously we’ll continue to monitor as he goes through it, but I feel really good about where he’s at physically and how his stuff and stamina seems to be holding up. “Is it looking in line with what’s normal? How is his recovery after a start? That’s stuff you pay close attention to.”Schmidt is 7-4 with a 3.61 ERA in his last 19 outings after starting the year 1-4 with a 6.30 ERA in eight starts through May 14.
