Yale University and 9 fraternities are being sued by women who want to reduce harassment, assault and discrimination on campus
BOILER-PIPE: Harvard University announced that students who were members of single-gender final clubs, fraternities and sororities would no longer be allowed to hold leadership positions in campus groups. At the time, the President of Harvard summed up their decision, suggesting that barring students from participation in the groups because of their gender “encourages a form of self-segregation that undermines the promise offered by Harvard’s diverse student body.
That is, imagine that certain university social clubs only admitted white students. Then the discrimination would seem obvious. If we wouldn’t tolerate segregation by race, why do we tolerate segregation by gender? This type of segregation is clearly discriminatory. As if reducing sexual assault and gender discrimination were not enough, removing the gender restriction on fraternities would also be a boost for the LGBTQIA community.
