The superconducting transition edge sensors (TES) were initially designed to search for elusive dark matter.
SLAC TES-based detector mounted in the LEM test module. The X-ray focal plane would be mounted directly above the detector and cover the hexagonal area shown in the center.A new advanced sensor may do the job.
What is their goal? To map galaxies’ X-ray emissions with great precision using a proposed satellite mission known as the Line Emission Mapper .Hubble captures a stunning lineup of galaxies in space “From a technological perspective, X-ray spectroscopy is of great interest to SLAC. And to have our technology being used above the atmosphere is very exciting,” Kenney added in the press release. As per the press release, these thin film sensors are nanofabricated. “We took a design that we used for a dark matter detector that’s optimized for really, really good energy resolution,” said Noah Kurinsky, a staff scientist at SLAC.
