Writer alarmed by lack of alarms
Most of us are familiar with a diverse variety of alarms in life. The clock radio jolts us awake with the cheerful banality of one radio announcer or another. Reversing trucks ‘beep beep beep’ annoyingly. Police and fire sirens shrill out as their vehicles push their way into traffic and speed toward some unknown disaster.
Some alarms are specific. “Get up now!” “Watch out!” “Don’t get in the way!” Others are more general. One imagines the air raid sirens in Kiev, and the lines of people descending into the subways. Will a bomb strike nearby, or not? Some threats take time to develop, and when the initial tweaks to our attention don’t bring an immediate and local flood or conflagration, it’s all too easy to stuff our alarm in a sock in the bottom of a drawer and forget about it. The flip side of this ignorance by design is that when the problem really manifests itself, we want to react with indignation, a “how could this happen to me?” bewilderment exacerbated by remembering the contentment we felt when it was happening only to others.
