The experimental brand MSCHF is proposing medical-style boots as a fashion statement.
“We make objects that have a point of view,” says Wiesner. “A lot of ‘ugly’ shoes happen by just layering lots of familiar pieces of shoe vernacular on top of each other, until you get this increasingly bulbous mass. The thing that sets [our shoe] apart is almost none of the visual language we’re working with is rooted in a sneaker space in the first place.”
To counter the idea of their new boot being deliberately hideous, the brand enlisted street style star to model the AC.1 boots. “Bloody takes very interesting, dynamic images, and he’s been able to elevate certain pieces to a level that they haven’t been before,” says Bentel. “He has a very good sense of coming up with a look to elevate [the shoes].” Osiris chose to sport them with a mesh tee, graphic shorts, and futuristic sunnies. It’s exactly how the brand hopes people would wear them.
But the MSCHF team also knows what they’re doing here; They know the shoe will have people talking. What would they say to the critics? “I would say maybe they’re not inventive,” says Bentel. “It’s not for everybody, and that’s totally okay. There are some people that really want to have fun with the way they look and present, and that’s what this is about.” They also have plans for even bolder shoe launches in the near future. “We really want to push it as far as we can,” says Bentel.
