MEAT COVE, N.S. — In the hours leading up to Monday’s solar eclipse, Simon d'Entremont arrived early in the day to station himself on the grounds of Meat Cove Campground, to position his camera equipment and figure out where and how best to capture the celestial event that was to unfold before his eyes.
Hillier, a hiker and self-professed ‘eclipse-ophile,’ and Lowe, a member of the Warren Astronomical Society, said neither wanted to view the solar eclipse amid large crowds. When they learned the path of totality would be passing over Atlantic Canada — and specifically Meat Cove, a place the two friends never visited before —travel plans were put in motion.
Hillier added that attending free university lectures from an astrophysicist led to his interest in eclipses. For the several hundred people that flocked to Monday’s event who didn’t bring along their own eats, the Lawless Lobster food truck opened up to serve hungry customers. Emily Young Lara, 8, of Florence, second from right, gets ready to view the solar eclipse on Monday afternoon as skies begin to darken, while, from left, father Curtis Young, sister Maya Young Lara, 10, and mother Teresa Lara Alas watch to ensure Emily is safe. Hundreds gathered at Meat Cove Campground to view the first major solar eclipse to pass through Nova Scotia since the early 1970s.
