opening harness racing card for 2024 is fast approaching. The horses went behind the starting gate on Sunday afternoon, May 19, at 1 p.m. To learn more – a sit-down session with Steve Fitzsimmons, in his second year as the raceway’s general manager.
Following high school, Steve attended Conestoga College in Kitchener, studying broadcasting. Steve’s experience as a broadcaster included being the play-by-play voice of the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League for 21 years. Steve spent eight years as a town councillor in Hanover. He was also the General Manager of Hanover Raceway for three years, 2020-2022.
Pickrem is part owner of two horses stabled in the Rennison stable: a seven-year-old mare, Top Of Her Trade and a three-year-old colt, Resuscitate. Besides jogging horses and doing chores around the Rennison stable, Pickrem does some of his own training. As we talked – Pickrem and I both marvelled at George Rennison being Truro Raceway’s leading trainer for each of the past eight years.
“I think this organization is important on behalf of the owners,” Pickrem said. “I hope I can use some of my own professional experience with my career to assist the board. I want to help out in any way I can.”
