METRO/ADVANCE/ for Allison Gregor Story on Turtles: An infant Kemp Ridley turtle waddles on the beaches off Rancho Nuevo, Tamaulipas Mexico to be taken by the surf water and into the Gulf of Mexico to its destination. The Kemp turtle is making a come-back as scientist from the US and Mexico record data and protect its habitat in desolated beaches north of Tampico, Mexico.
A Kemp's ridley sea turtle nested Saturday morning at Surfside Beach, according to the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research. She laid 80 eggs before going back to the water. Someone from the public spotted the new mother and alerted the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research which sent a team to remove the eggs, because as soon as she returned to the water, the mother sea turtle will not come back looking for her nest. The nest was taken to Padre Island’s National Seashore's incubation facility to ensure it is protected and can have a high hatching success rate.
Kemp’s ridleys are the most endangered sea turtle in the world and almost went extinct in the 1980s because of humans, the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research posted to Facebook. Poaching and fishing gear had drastic impacts on the Kemp’ ridleys populations. The Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research urged anyone who sees a nesting turtle, tracks or any sea turtles on any Texas beach, to call the 1-866-TURTLE 5 hotline. Kemp's ridley typically nest between April and August.
