Officials with the Canadian Hurricane Centre attended the organization’s 45th session of the Regional Association IV World Meteorological Organization hurricane committee to request the name Fiona be retired.

However, the name is retired if the hurricane is so severe that it causes devastating damage and loss of life. This was the case with storms like Dorian, Sandy, Igor and Juan.
