The WHO will convene an emergency committee next week to assess whether the monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern.
WHO will gather experts together on June 23 to discuss virus said to be behaving unusuallyTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization, seen on May 24, 2022, said Tuesday the unusual behaviour of the monkeypox virus and the expanding number of countries where it's being detected helped prompt a June 23 meeting to consider whether it represents a public health emergency of international concern.
Monkeypox is endemic in parts of Africa but there have been more cases both in those countries and the rest of the world in recent months. The virus causes flu-like symptoms and skin lesions, and spreads through close contact. WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that it was time to consider stepping up the response because the virus is behaving unusually, more countries are affected and there is a need for international co-ordination.
Canada has detected 112 infections as of June 9, with federal health officials expected to update the number this week.
