Nancy ArmourLYON, France — There’s more at stake in Sunday’s final than a fourth World Cup title.
“Our team in particular, the U.S. women’s national team, has done so much in that fight for equality. But the best thing we can do is have great performances in this tournament,” Press added. “It’s kind of a way to celebrate all that we fought for and all that we will continue to fight for as the game grows.”
Bowing out in the quarterfinals of a major international tournament, as they did for the first time at the Rio Olympics, is seen as a failure. Losing Sunday’s final would be seen as coming up short, despite the fact they are the first women’s team, and one of only three total, to reach three consecutive World Cup finals.
