Mbappe, 23, scored two goals for France in a 3\u002D1 win against Poland here at the Al Thumama Stadium on Sunday
Olivier Giroud scored in the first half for France and Robert Lewandowski scored on a penalty nine minutes into second-half extra time, on his second attempt after goaltender Hugo Lloris came off his goal line too early in stopping the first one.
“I’m very happy to be able to get through to the quarter-finals,” Mbappe said. “It was a difficult game; we were playing a tough side and we managed to score important goals in key moments. We didn’t play as well in the first half as well as we could have, but we still ended up winning and we’re delighted with that.”Article content
Poland had an outstanding chance to take the lead 38 minutes in when midfielder Piotr Zielinski found himself alone with the ball four yards inside the France penalty area. Zielinski, however, blasted the ball right at goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who made an outstanding save with his feet and then got a little help clearing the rebound off the goal line.
“We always wanted to have two players around Dembele on the right and Mbappe on the left. They might be able to get around one player, but not necessarily two or three. We were hoping to have more players around Mbappe to be able to stop him.” France was more dominant in the second half and Mbappe scored when given all day at the top of the penalty area to tee up a shot, which he hammered past Szczesny. In injury time, Mbappe then scored one of the goals of the tournament, bending a ball into the corner over Szczesny.“This is the competition of my dreams and I’m delighted to be here,” Mbappe said. “I’ve been preparing for this tournament throughout the season, both physically and mentally.
