Pepe gives Portugal 2-0 lead over Switzerland
With star Cristiano Ronaldo watching from the bench, Portugal got goals from Gonçalo Ramos and Pepe to take a 2-0 halftime lead over Switzerland in the World Cup’s final round-of-16 match.
Ramos replaced Ronaldo in Portugal’s starting lineup in what Coach Fernando Santos described as a “strategic option.” Ramos scored an odd-angle goal in the 17th minute, blasting a shot into the top of the net from close range. Pepe added his goal in the 33rd minute, heading in a corner kick. Portugal had numerous scoring chances as the half wore on — it finished the half with five shots on target — as it continued to assert its dominance over a Swiss team looking for its first quarterfinals appearance since 1954.
