From Auckland to Bangkok, countries around the globe ushered in the New Year with dazzling displays of fireworks, lively celebrations, and cultural traditions.
Auckland celebrated New Year's Eve as the first major city, with thousands gathering downtown or on volcanic peaks for fireworks. A light display honored Indigenous people. Countries in the South Pacific, including New Zealand, welcomed the New Year 18 hours before Times Square in New York. Fireworks lit up Sydney Harbor, where over a million people gathered for the celebration, including a singalong led by Robbie Williams.
Much of Japan observed the holiday, with temples and homes cleaned, marking the Year of the Snake, a symbol of rebirth. Stores sold snake-themed products.
