After a brief bout of freezing rain and fog on Monday, residents should prepare for worsening conditions as a high-impact winter storm moves into the area Wednesday
The Sault Ste. The Marie region faces a dynamic and challenging weather pattern this week, beginning with a brief period of light wintry precipitation on Monday and building toward significant snow by midweek.
Slightly cooler air returns for the end of the week, and attention turns to another storm in the American Midwest that could miss the Sault region to the south - but even a slight push to the north could see it bring even more snow heading into the weekend. Cloudy skies with periods of light wintry precipitation dominate the weather story on Monday across the Sault region as a quick-moving system tracks through the area. The morning brings the greatest concern, where a brief period of light freezing rain and a wintry mix is possible. Winds will remain light from the southeast at 10km/h with gusts to 15km/h. Visibility will be significantly reduced to less than 1km through mid-morning in areas of freezing fog and precipitation. The good news is this system is progressive - precipitation will taper off by late afternoon as temperatures climb to 2°C during peak heating. Overnight, attention turns to the potential for another round of freezing fog as temperatures fall to -5°C under mostly cloudy skies. Tuesday features a deceptively quiet day as we find ourselves in the calm before the storm. Mostly cloudy to cloudy skies will persist, with cloud cover increasing by evening as clouds push northward ahead of our next system. Temperatures will reach a high near +2°C with overnight lows dropping to -5°C. No precipitation is expected, though clouds will continue to thicken through the day. Wednesday will bring a high-impact winter storm to the Sault area, with significant snow accumulation. Snow will overspread the region Tuesday night and continue through Wednesday, with accumulations likely 10-20cm. East-northeast winds will increase to 25km/h with gusts to 50km/h. Temperatures will struggle to just -2°C for a high with overnight lows near -6°C. Thursday will be mostly cloudy with an east wind and daytime highs of -2°C. We should see a little more sun on Friday as temperatures climb back to near freezing.
