The awards recognize employers and workers who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to health and safety in workplaces.The company produces data used to facilitate working safely on the ice. They have also codeveloped safety training programs that are culturally contextualized. Geoff Sparkes, a firefighter with the Corner Brook Fire Department was awarded the WorkplaceNL Safety Leadership Award for Workers.
Sparkes has spent the last 15 years promoting the importance of health and safety to his coworkers. He completed a peer-to-peer mental health support training and led a gap analysis on radio communication of fire departments across Canada. Candidates for the awards are submitted through public nominations, and winners are chosen by an internal committee.
