Thousands of workers from the International Longshore & Warehouse Union stopped working Friday, shutting down 29 ports along the West Coast for an eight-hour shift in a demonstration to push for racial and social justice. The union traces its roots to racial politics: Employers in the 1930s had deliberately hired black strike breakers, a tactic that the union was able to beat when the workers united across racial lines in the summer of 1934.
Hundreds of people gathered at the Port of Oakland for a rally to celebrate Juneteenth. The workers plan to march to Oakland’s City Hall. “Juneteenth is not something I celebrated growing up,” said Jocelyn Wicker, who is black and grew up in Tacoma, Wash. She works in fundraising for a nonprofit in San Francisco.
Her colleague Sarah Huck said she attended the rally to stand in solidarity with black leaders. “Many of us are having an awakening to the injustice that exists in our own communities,” said Ms. Huck, who is white and lives in San Francisco.
