South Alabama had a chance to grab national headlines Saturday at the Rose Bowl, but a questionable decision by Jaguars head coach Kane Wommack late in the game got publicity for all the wrong reasons.

In his postgame radio interview, Wommack said he didn’t feel comfortable kicking a field goal in that situation to go up 34-29 with around three minutes left and potentially allowing UCLA and quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson to drive for a game-winning touchdown. He declined to elaborate as to why he didn’t simply leave his offense on the field to go for it.

“We had a little trick play on the field goal,” Wommack said. “I thought we needed to go up two scores against a quarterback like this. That kid is a phenomenal quarterback. He’s been in these moments before. He’s a gamer. “They adjusted well to it. We thought we had them right there with the fake field goal. Would have been nice to get that one and iced the game. But we didn’t put ourselves in position in the plays prior to that moment to pull away from there when we had some opportunities to do that.”

As Wommack noted, South Alabama had first down on the UCLA 30 with a chance to run out the clock moments earlier. La’Damian Webb ran twice for four yards, then Terrion Avery ran for four yards to make it fourth-and-2. After the botched fake, Thompson-Robinson then guided the Bruins from their 33 to the South Alabama 7 in seven plays. The Bruins’ first play of the drive was a 29-yard pass from Thompson-Robinson to Titus Mokiao-Atimalala.Note to readers: if you purchase something through one of our affiliate links we may earn a commission.
