If companies want to increase the number of women working in AI—and increase diversity in the field—then leaders must celebrate that diversity and ensure that everyone feels comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and venturing into unfamiliar territory.

. Forbes asked several honorees to share their advice for women interested in pursuing an career in AI.

“AI has impacted, most if not all industries, especially those that are really focused on the customer journey,” said Tammy Lucas, vice president of marketing at Best Western Hotels & Resorts in Phoenix. “As women continue to take on stronger and more prominent leadership roles, and as we continue to have a need for marketing, analytics and technology, combined expertise to maximize business outcomes, the opportunities for women and AI will also continue to evolve.

Lucas recommends figuring out what makes you excited about the world of AI and then to seek out opportunities to get involved. “Most, if not all industries have had to embrace AI, so there may be opportunities for you to get involved within your current company,” she says. It’s essential that AI applications support and serve society at large, making it even more essential that inclusive and diverse teams are designing and building AI applications, says Kristen Bennie, head of open experience, at NatWest Group in the United Kingdom. “Women make up nearly half the world’s population and bring a great amount diversity of thinking and experiences to the field, so we need more women involved in AI to reduce and eliminate bias,” she says.

Given how much AI is growing, there are many opportunities for women to explore, says Amala Duggirala, enterprise chief operations and technology officer at Regions Bank in Atlanta. However, she encourages women to explore nontraditional routes to working in AI, which includes industries such as marketing, real estate and education.
