Explore the stories of remarkable women in history, from suffragettes like Kate Sheppard to scientists like Marie Curie and Grace Hopper, who changed the world.

Throughout history, women have made extraordinary contributions to society, science, and politics, often overcoming immense barriers. This article highlights some of these brave women who fought for women's rights and advanced human knowledge. From the first known midwife in ancient Greece to pioneers in computer technology, their stories continue to inspire.

Early Pioneers in Medicine and Science

Agnodice, according to legend, was the first known midwife in the 4th century BC. She practiced gynecology in Greece when other women were banned from doing so. To study under a key medical practitioner, she cut off her hair and disguised herself as a man.

Her story was often quoted in the 18th and 19th centuries to encourage midwives and gynecologists. Although it is unclear whether Agnodice's story is fact or fiction, her legend has become a symbol of female equality, intelligence, and determination.

Marie Curie is another iconic figure. In 1915, she worked in a mobile military hospital X-Ray unit after seeing the need for radiological centres near the front lines to assist surgeons. Her contributions to science and medicine have left a lasting legacy.

Suffragettes and the Fight for Voting Rights

Rosa May Billinghurst, known as the cripple suffragette, participated in demonstrations for women's votes using her crutches and tricycle. Emmeline Pankhurst, a leading suffragette, was imprisoned in circa 1911 and described her first incarceration as like a human being in the process of being turned into a wild beast.

Kate Sheppard, through her articles, pamphlets, letters, and petitions, helped rally campaigners and collected 32,000 signatures to push Parliament to grant women's suffrage in New Zealand. Her efforts succeeded, making New Zealand the first self-governing country to grant national voting rights to women in 1893. Her face appears on the country's $10 note and on a commemorative stamp.

Around 80% of African countries gave women universal suffrage between 1950 and 1975, during a time of rapid European decolonization. However, in some places, such as Afghanistan, women's right to vote was stripped after being given due to extreme government shifts.

Trailblazers in Knowledge and Technology

Juana Ramírez de Asbaje, born in the 17th century, thirsted for knowledge but had little access to formal education as a girl. Her intelligence drew the attention of the viceroy of Mexico, Antonio Sebastián de Toledo, who tested her with 40 scholars. She became a nun, amassed a large private library, and wrote poems, dramas, and books. Her work for women's rights made her an icon of Mexico, and her former cloister is now a center for higher education and is featured on currency.

Chien-Shiung Wu, pictured in 1963, verified a problem with Xenon in the B nuclear reactor for the Manhattan Project's physicists and engineers. Her expertise was crucial to the project's success.

Grace Hopper, an American mathematician and rear admiral in the US Navy, was photographed at the UNIVAC keyboard. She was a pioneer in computer technology and helped devise UNIVAC I, the first commercial electronic computer. Her work laid the foundation for modern computing.

These women, among many others, have shown remarkable courage and determination. Their sacrifices and achievements continue to inspire change in the world, society, and individual lives.
