This is all true; we’re no longer in an era where a woman becoming CEO of a truly major company is considered big news, nor are there so few women at the top as to make them somehow emblematic of women as a class.

It’s also true, and worth recognizing, that having women in top leadership roles expands opportunities for women throughout the entire organization; this column has covered that extensively.

But, if I might draw your eyes and attention, this is only a milestone, and ultimately a minor one. Not only is there so much work still to be done, but we’re looking at only a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of working women, those flying already in the most rarefied circles. Further, out of 500 companies listed, women run just 44; that's under 10% of the total.

So let's take a look at the women below those topping this list. That higher bar of entry, you see, extends downward to every level and virtually every position at virtually every company. Studies have shown that women are consistently held to higher standards and judged more critically than their male peers.
