Woman who suffered stroke to run 42.2 km in first Toronto Marathon since COVID. Sunday marks the return of marathons in Toronto and Mississauga.

Just when Amanda Trotti was about to run her first marathon in New York, she suffered a stroke. At the first Toronto Marathon after the pandemic this weekend, Trotti, 44, is finally going to fulfil her dream.: a cornicello. After missing her firsttwice, first, because of the stroke, then due to the pandemic, and, finally, almost missing it again this year due to COVID-19, the 44-year-old Vaughan woman isn’t leaving anything to chance.

Trotti started running when she was 40 and loved the atmosphere of races: the energy, the music, even the snacks. After running some half marathons, she decided to tackle her first full marathon in 2019 in her hometown, New York. But after joining a friend for a 14-kilometre run in late 2020, Trotti stopped worrying about her speed. She started training, running daily at 5 a.m., four times a week through the pandemic.

Jay Glassman, race director for the Toronto Marathon, said a number of runners and volunteers cancelled in the lead-up to Sunday’s race, but he’s still expecting a good turnout; runners have registered from 63 countries.
