A 27-year-old woman in Prince George, Canada, received a sentence of four months of house arrest and a year of probation for smearing blood on the walls of a cell at the RCMP detachment. The incident occurred after the woman was arrested following a disturbance at a local shelter.
A Prince George provincial court judge sentenced Adut Wol Madut, a 27-year-old woman, to four months of house arrest and a year of probation for smearing blood on the walls of a cell at the RCMP detachment. Madut pleaded guilty to mischief and assaulting a peace officer on Monday, January 27th. The incident occurred after Madut was arrested following a disturbance at the Association Advocating for Women and Community shelter on February 25th, 2024.
According to court testimony, Madut stripped naked in the cell, covered a camera with a tampon, spat at an officer, and threw bloodied pants at another officer after dipping them in toilet water. Judge Peter McDermick accepted the joint sentencing submission from both the Crown and defence lawyers. He noted that Madut arrived in Canada as a refugee from Sudan in 2004 and is currently receiving treatment for schizophrenia. Madut believes she has experienced fetal alcohol syndrome, but this has not been officially diagnosed. Judge McDermick stipulated that Madut's house arrest allows for two-hour outings on three days a week to attend appointments and purchase groceries. She is prohibited from possessing or consuming drugs, except for prescribed medication, and is allowed to consume alcohol only within her Calgary residence. The judge also mandated that Madut participate in and complete a counselling program directed by her probation officer. The online court file reveals that Madut also faces charges related to causing a disturbance, wilfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, and breaching a release order on March 21st, 2024 in Prince George. She is scheduled to appear in Downtown Community Court in Vancouver on February 5th regarding a charge of assaulting a peace officer on November 24th, 2024.
