Though police circulated the name and description she had provided, nobody had seen the man at the crash site.
Only one occupant was detected by the car’s data recorder, and Jaramillo’s DNA was found on the driver’s airbag, state police said in a statement Saturday night. The key to the car — which had been stolen Monday, Feb. 28 — was found in the police vehicle where Jaramillo sat after the crash.
When the KOB reporter told Jaramillo during the interview that an affidavit indicated she had been alone in the Malibu, she responded: “I don’t think that it is right for them to say things that have their opinion like that, until they are in a situation like that themselves.” The district attorney’s spokesman said in announcing the arrest that Jaramillo’s story was “suspiciously similar” to one she gave in September 2021 when she was found in a stolen car after a chase. She reported then that a man held her against her will with a knife to her neck and he hid on the floorboard.
Police suspected she was acting alone in that case, but prosecutors declined to charge her “pending further investigation.” In addition to the murders, Jaramillo faces charges of reckless homicide by vehicle, receiving and transferring a stolen vehicle, and tampering with evidence, according to the Santa Fe district attorney’s office. As of Sunday, she was still being held without bail.
