A Nebraska woman says she's heartbroken by Smithfield Foods' response after sharing that her grandfather died from the coronavirus and that her aunt and uncle, also employees at their pork processing plant became ill.
“I want you to know he died in the hospital alone, isolated, and scared,” she wrote. “I want you to know no one in my family was able to say goodbye to him. I want you to know that we aren’t able to have a proper burial for him because of risk of infection. I want you to know that my aunt, uncle, and grandma cannot attend his viewing and cremation because they’re still infectious.”“Dear Vy, We are deeply sorry for your loss.
"All I saw from them was just the same comment copy and pasted under every single comment and I was so angry and I wanted them to see the people they're affecting ... I wanted them to see my grandpa for who he is,” she said. One such response to comments on recent posts includes,"This is not representative of Smithfield’s view. We remain committed to protecting the health and wellbeing of our employees and producing safe, high-quality and affordable food for our customers."
