“She was looking over the balcony, but she couldn’t bring herself to jump,” said one witness.

The B.C. Coroners Service has confirmed a woman in her 60s died in an apartment fire on Craigflower Road in Esquimalt Sunday afternoon.

Esquimalt Fire Chief Chris Jancowski said he was unable to say what happened to the woman, but he acknowledged that one occupant of the apartment complex remains missing.Jancowski said a number of other residents of the building sustained minor injuries while they were being rescued from the fourth floor.

“And then a woman came out on the [fourth-floor] balcony. She clearly was trying to find refuge from the fire.Woods said a number of motorists and people from the neighborhood grabbed a blanket and were encouraging the elderly woman to jump. Robert Blanchet, who happened to be driving along Craigflower when he spotting smoke billowing from the apartment, confirmed Woods’ version of events.
