A woman died after taking a nearly 100-foot fall while hiking near Oregon's Columbia River Gorge, on Friday, officials said.
Water users of the Colorado River are facing a reckoning due to over 20 years of dropping river flow from overuse and a heating climate that are forcing allocation cutbacks.A woman died after taking a nearly 100-foot fall while hiking near Oregon's Columbia River Gorge, on Friday, officials said.
The woman, who was not identified, was hiking with friends on the Multnomah Falls-Larch Mountain Trail, which is just outside Portland, when she fell, causing a head injury, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. The sheriff's office said first responders were called to the scene at about 1:15 p.m. Friday, and learned that bystanders were giving the woman CPR while they were still on the way.
Corbett fire officials reached the woman about 1.3 miles off the trailhead and said she died at the scene, the statement said. The sheriff's office said she will be identified after her family has been notified. Multnomah Falls is Oregon's tallest waterfall and the most popular natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest. About a 30-minute drive outside of Portland, the site sees about 2 million visitors each year, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
