A woman, who was under the care of the Ministry of Child and Family Development in British Columbia, had her request for a hearing denied after she claimed her rights were violated when her emotional support rats were taken away. The tribunal ruled that the care team had made various efforts to support her in having the rats, but due to concerns for her well-being and her behavior in caring for them, the rats had to be removed.

A woman who claimed a government ministry violated her rights by not allowing emotional support rats when she was a teen in care won’t be getting a hearing at B.C.’s Human Rights Tribunal.

Anika said the care team made many efforts to support AS in her having the rats but her behaviour in caring for them as well as concerns for her well-being led to their removal from her care. Later that month, AS was told if she did not follow the rules, a new home would be found for the rats.
