Along a stretch of the Vermilion River, in the shadow of the Ohio Turnpike, Caitlin Colleary of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History expects to find fossil evidence of the fierce, prehistoric fish known as Dunkleosteus.
Wolf Run Preserve in Wakeman prime spot for fossil explorationWAKEMAN, Ohio –
“So, it’s the right age rock,” said Colleary, the museum’s assistant curator for vertebrate paleontology, and it’s the right place, too. They can be found elsewhere, such as Australia and Morrocco, she said, “but the best collection is definitely from here.”The promise of fossils is just one of many features to Wolf Run Preserve, about 10 miles west of Oberlin.
The preserve also is home to the uncommon cerulean warbler, and you will also find the rare West Virginia white butterfly, which lays its eggs in the two-leafed toothwort, a small, spring wildflower with white blossoms that can be found in the floodplain and wooded areas. “I love humans, but the universe provides so much more!” Styer shared in an email. “Wolf Run Nature Preserve is managed for the benefit of beaver, of deer, of bald eagle, of wild mint, of lobelia, of big bluestem grass, of mushrooms, of water, of rock.”Another curiosity to the preserve, discovered by Styer not long after he bought the land, is a crack in the riverbed that releases natural gas.
