Crab fishermen like Jason Sullivan his peers that protested at several locations in St. John's on Monday say DFO could prevent disaster if it counted all areas in 3L as one biomass.

Not being able to fish for more crab, he added, means the inshore fleet doesn’t have a chance to prove their own theory, that there is a good stock of crab to catch within that 25-mile limit. It added the precautionary approach was developed through a peer-review science process and extensive consultation with industry, Indigenous partners and key stakeholders.
“There have been no new or separated assessment divisions as a result of the introduction of the newly established precautionary approach framework.”The department said it has completed 10 separate consultations with harvesters, Indigenous groups, the FFAW, industry and other partners from around the province.
“Because they cancelled that meeting, we didn’t know what to do. They are our union and we’re expecting them to fight for us. A lot of us are getting screwed over here, so we all went down to the union to try to get them to do something for us,” he said.With the FFAW meeting cancelled for 3L crab harvesters, Jason Sullivan and other members of that fleet, went to St. John's to confront the union executive on their concerns about this year's season.
