The Northway Wellness Centre will open its 20 withdrawal management and safe beds by the end of the summer

The project formerly known as the Residential Withdrawal Management and Safe Beds facility currently under construction at the former Sault Star building on Old Garden River Road was renamed the Northway Wellness Centre at a sneak peek event on Friday.

"This is a facility that is obviously very needed in our community, something we put a great deal of time, effort and work into," said Ross Romano, MPP for Sault Ste. Marie. "There has been a lot of grief on the road to get here, but we are obviously very happy to be in a position to see this facility close to completion and nearing acceptance of its first clients."

Case said the new facility will be fitted with mostly new equipment, but some recently-acquired pieces will make the move from SAH. All staff who currently operate the program at Sault Area Hospital will be moved over to Northway Wellness Centre when it opens."We have an overall move plan and we are working on the fine details of that," said Case.

The bulk of the funding for the facility has come from the provincial government, while Algoma Steel Inc. has donated toward outdoor improvements, including a courtyard and furniture.
