Artist Rachel Rose brings nature, social history, and magic to Gladstone Gallery with her latest short film 'Enclosure.'

Not only has there been a pandemic , but Rose has become, in quick succession, a mother of two: daughter Eden, 2, and son Silas, 1. “My consciousness and my sense of self is entirely developed as a mom now,” she says from her home in Manhattan. “And there’s something related to that inwhich is about the shift in consciousness that developed through the shift in the landscape.
Let me explain. The roughly 30-minute production, a joint commission by the Park Avenue Armory and the LUMA Foundation , is set in rural 17th-century England, where its protagonists—a cultish clan of grifters called “The Famlee”—are circling their next target.
Many of the older works, Martin says, “displayed these really bucolic scenes of few, if any, people; lots of foliage; green space; a perfect, natural, uncultivated sense of the world: blue skies, moonlight, a harvest season…. And yet almost every single one of them is totally constructed.” The landscapes owed their emptiness to the mass exodus of disenfranchised farmers, which Rose understood.
One of the film’s most striking visual flourishes—a large, dark orb seen hovering amid the clouds—deals in another kind of magical thinking. During the editing process, as Rose worked on color-correcting the sky , it occurred to her to make a more conspicuous intervention. She had been influenced by the idea that some early Christian iconography surfaced from reports of extraterrestrial sightings.
And then there’s something rather different: Rose has been working on the script for a science-fiction movie . Yet she doesn’t see this new frontier as all that new.
