We took on roles akin to aunties, uncles and godparents for young people who had lengthy sentences in youth prisons and it made a difference.

As part of New Jersey's Young Adult Empowerment, young men who were incarcerated and exhibited violent behavior while in custody gradually became less violent and experienced hopefulness, and then success.The slide on the Zoom screen reads “Celebrations: driver’s license, bank account, new job, college.” We unmute, and like aunties, uncles and cousins, we cheer and offer affirmations for each accomplishment. Young men who are finding healing, kinship and hope.
