Sidney Crosby and Pittsburgh Penguins in Cole Harbour | SaltWireThe seasonal rules kicked in Oct. 1 and will remain in effect as late as April 30, depending on the route. Signs are posted on highways across B.C., says the Transportation Ministry, and are enforced by police or ministry officials.
Some highways that do not go through mountain passes or high snowfall areas will have the restrictions lifted a month sooner, on March 31. In the Lower Mainland, most highways are exempt due to the more temperate winter climate except for the Sea-to-Sky Highway going to Whistler and sections of Highway 1 from Hope heading into the Interior.Mud and snow tires, designated with the M+S label and can be used year-round, are also considered winter tires. Trucks or heavy commercial vehicles over 11,794 kilograms must carry tire chains.
Drivers caught travelling without winter tires or chains could be issued a $121 fine under the Motor Vehicle Act, while commercial vehicles that bypass an active chain-up area could be fined $598.
