A potent winter storm wreaking havoc across the central United States, unleashing a dangerous combination of snow, ice, and frigid temperatures. From Kansas and Missouri to New Jersey, the storm has caused widespread travel disruptions and dangerous conditions.

A powerful winter storm was sweeping across the central US on Sunday, bringing a dangerous mix of snow, ice, and plummeting temperatures. The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings from Kansas and Missouri—where blizzard conditions are anticipated—to New Jersey. In the two states under blizzard warnings, travel could be extremely difficult to impossible, with high winds swirling snow and reducing visibility. Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches.

The polar vortex, an area of ultra-cold air typically confined around the North Pole, sometimes escapes or extends southward, impacting the US, Europe, or Asia. By Saturday evening, heavy snow was expected between central Kansas and Indiana, particularly along and north of Interstate 70. A portion of the interstate was closed in central Kansas by the afternoon. Total snow and sleet accumulation in parts of Kansas and northern Missouri could reach up to 14 inches. The storm was forecast to move into the Ohio Valley, causing significant travel disruptions. It would reach the Mid-Atlantic states on Sunday into Monday, with a hard freeze even predicted as far south as Florida. The National Weather Service also warned of the possibility of severe thunderstorms, including tornadoes and hail, ahead of the storm system’s cold front as it crosses the Lower Mississippi Valley. Parts of upstate New York experienced 3 feet or more of snow from a lake effect event expected to last until late Sunday afternoon. A fire truck, several tractor-trailers, and passenger vehicles overturned west of Salina, Kansas. Trucks also jackknifed and went into ditches, according to state Highway Patrol Trooper Ben Gardner
