Winnipeg Jets 2026-27 Season Preview After Connor Hellebuyck Trade Request
Winnipeg Jets, Connor Hellebuyck, Mark Scheifele

The Winnipeg Jets face a tumultuous 2026-27 NHL season after Connor Hellebuyck's trade request and suspension, but Mark Scheifele's career year offers hope.

The Winnipeg Jets are navigating a turbulent 2026-27 NHL season following a steep decline from 116 points to 82 in 2025-26, a year in which they finished eight wins behind the Wildcard-occupying team. Only six NHL teams scored fewer goals, and their goal suppression was equally poor. The situation worsened when Connor Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and the Jets' top player, sought to leave Winnipeg despite five seasons remaining on his contract. On August 27, news of his trade request surfaced, and after he failed to report to the 2026 training camp, the Jets suspended him without pay for the start of the 2026-27 season. Hellebuyck is coming off a weak year (23-23-11, .895 save percentage), but remains an MVP-level goaltender who can elevate a team.

Hellebuyck Trade Request and Suspension Impact

Hellebuyck's future in Winnipeg had been widely discussed amid a wave of American players requesting trades out of Canadian markets, particularly after Team USA won gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics. The 33-year-old goaltender finally made his request on August 27, and after failing to report to training camp, the Jets suspended him without pay for the start of the 2026-27 season. A return to Winnipeg seems all but ruled out, leaving Hellebuyck to sit at home until traded or if he chooses to rejoin the team. In the meantime, Winnipeg's goaltending tandem consists of Stuart Skinner and Domenic DiVincentiis, the latter having yet to play a single NHL game. That's a lot of weight on Skinner's shoulders, especially given his shaky performances in high-leverage situations.

Mark Scheifele Leads Offense Amid Uncertainty

Despite the dark clouds, there are reasons for optimism. Star forward Mark Scheifele is coming off a career year with 103 points in 82 games, and with the history of the two Winnipeg franchises merged into one set of records, he is just 22 points back of tying Dale Hawerchuk's Jets career total. Scheifele, the first draft pick in Jets 2.0 history, remains the team's primary offensive catalyst heading into his age-33 season. He's never been particularly adept as a two-way center, but he can generate chances, and his chemistry with Kyle Connor remains palpable. Connor, who scored 39 goals last year, and Gabe Vilardi, who scored at least 30, will flank Scheifele on the top line to start the 2026-27 season. Fortunately for the Jets, Connor has shown no signs of following his U.S. Olympic teammate out the door.

Forward Depth and Youth Movement

Beyond that top line, no Jets forward scored more than 20 goals in 2025-26, highlighting how bad Winnipeg's forward depth was and how desperately it needs to improve. The Jets lost Nikolaj Ehlers in free agency ahead of the 2025-26 season and responded by signing Gustav Nyquist and Jonathan Toews. Ehlers scored 89 points across the regular season and playoffs to help Carolina win the Stanley Cup, while Nyquist managed one goal in 51 games in what will likely be his final NHL season, and Toews retired for good in June. It was unrealistic to expect the Jets to replace Ehlers with two veterans in their late 30s, but even they couldn't have foreseen how poorly it would go. Unsurprisingly, the Jets are slated to pivot toward a much younger group of secondary scorers in 2026-27, with one particularly interesting name: Brad Lambert, the No. 30 overall pick in 2022, who has had an up-and-down go in the organization. We expect Lambert to occupy a middle-six role this season, marking a definite shift for a Jets team that has been reluctant to give prospects any kind of rope in recent seasons. It'd be smart for the Jets to consider sticking some of their skilled younger players on a line with two-way standout and captain Adam Lowry to see if he can impart any defensive wisdom.

Outlook for the 2026-27 Season

The Jets have a relatively defined path to get out of this mess and start writing a new page in their ever-changing history books, but it probably won't be enough to get them back to the top of the table. It will be difficult to feel truly optimistic about them until the Hellebuyck situation is resolved. With a potential return to Winnipeg seemingly all but completely ruled out, Hellebuyck will just have to sit at home until he's traded or if he chooses to swallow his pride and rejoin the Jets. The team's success may hinge on whether young players like Lambert can step up and whether Skinner can handle the workload in goal.
