The school, a nonresidential facility, will operate year-round from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and will serve local children. Officials said the program is centered around a play-based curriculum to enhance children’s social, emotional and cognitive development. The school will serve 150 students in 12 classrooms and feature indoor and outdoor classrooms, a STEM garden and a Family Success Center among other spaces.
“We’re just so extremely grateful and feel so blessed for this opportunity from the Catherine Hershey School,” Kirk said. “The first definition is if we are very successful with the children and families they may not need a place like Milton Hershey School because part of our job is to help [parents] gain employability and the skills to earn a family-sustaining wage. However, we know because of the trust and success we’re going to have with children and families that some of them may want to consider Milton Hershey School for their future educational home life and health life needs.
Dauphin County Judge John J. McNally ruled in October 2020 that the school for the first time will be allowed to extend its educational reach beyond its Derry Township campus. McNally’s approval of the childcare center plan was required because the deed of trust issued by Milton and Catherine Hershey in 1909 restricted the spending of trust income solely to the existing private residential school in Derry Township.
