Power outages leave thousands in the dark as windstorm sweeps over Vancouver Island
Posted: Feb. 20, 2023 7:43PMThousands of BC Hydro customers across Vancouver Island are experiencing power outages as a windstorm that has prompted Environment CanadaAs of 7:40 p.m., nearly 20,000 BC Hydro customers on Vancouver Island had lost electricity, according to the Crown corporation’sThat included nearly 5,500 homes and businesses in central and northern Vancouver Island, mostly in Parksville and Qualicum Beach, and more than 14,000 outages on the South Island.
The Cowichan Valley seemed to be hit especially hard, with more than 6,000 properties in Duncan and North Cowichan affected.Anyone who has lost power is advised to check BC Hydro’s outages list, follow the company onCHEK NewsletterSign Me Up BC Hydro also advises to turn off electric heaters and major appliances, unplug sensitive electronics and only operate a portable generator outdoors and in a location where the exhaust can’t enter your home.
For those who start to become cold during the outage, keep the heat in by avoiding opening doors and windows. If that doesn’t work, check for a local warming shelter in your region.
