From 1876 to 2023, just three families have owned the Windsor, N.S. hardware store
Jeff Redden has hung up his iconic red Home Hardware shirt after a 30-year career with the business in Windsor. The store owner’s last day was March 31.WINDSOR, N.S. — A Hants County business owner is ready to enjoy retirement after dedicating three decades to customer service.
Last fall, he began negotiating selling the family owned business, with the transition taking place throughout the spring. Redden said he returned with the intention of relocating the small hardware shop from downtown Windsor and growing the business.“We also knew that in order to survive, we needed to get into a bigger facility and that’s how we landed out at the Fort Edward Mall,” said Redden of their Wentworth Road location.
There are two employees who have been with the company since before Redden signed on — Mike Sheehy and Carey Rafuse — and several more that have been with Redden for at least 20 to 25 years. “He treated us like family — his compassion, his loyalty to us was above and beyond. He had your back,” Webb added.“You always walked into work feeling happy to be here,” said Ettinger.
A wall of memories graces a portion of Windsor Home Hardware — showing visitors the history of the store, which dates back to the original business in 1876, known as Wilcox Brothers Ltd. - Carole Morris-UnderhillRedden, who lives in Wolfville with his wife Joanne, is not planning on slowing down any time soon — he’s just taking time to enjoy more family outings and leisure activities.
Andrew Payzant, the president and CEO of Payzant Building Products Ltd., purchased Windsor Home Hardware and Windsor Home Furniture. The acquisition marks the ninth and 10th stores for the company, which also owns the nearby Garlands Crossing and Hantsport locations.Payzant Building Products Ltd., which started in 1964 by Andrew Payzant’s father, John, has local roots.
He said unlike some big box stores, his stores are locally owned and operated, not headquartered in another province or country. He said he wants to continue to support local — something Redden was passionate about. Even though he’s retired, Jeff Redden says he plans to continue supporting local charities and organizations that are near and dear to his heart. One of the projects is the rebuilding of Windsor’s tree canopy. In the fall of 2022, several hardy trees were planted in Victoria Park in downtown Windsor as part of a partnership between West Hants Municipality, Windsor Home Hardware and Tree Canada.
“I can’t emphasize enough what a good job Jeff has done in the community and we certainly look to follow his footsteps and his tradition, not just in Windsor, but the whole of West Hants."
