Reed, the 1970 NBA Most Valuable Player, was a burly interior presence in an era of basketball that required one. On five occasions over his 10-year career, Reed averaged at least 20 points, and six times he averaged at least 13 rebounds. On teams stocked with graceful scorers and intuitive passers, he supplied the heft that converted Broadway showmanship into wins.
