Today, it was announced that Woodstock 50, set to be hosted on August 16 through 18, has not only lost its main event producer, but the venue itself.
music festival is set to come back as Woodstock 50 this August. An iconic event originally held on a dairy farm in upstate New York in 1969, the O.G. Woodstock has since become an iconic piece of pop culture; there was bad weather, hoards of people , and loads of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. Performers included all of the greats—Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead, and so many more.
Today it was announced that Woodstock 50, set to take place on August 16 through 18, has not only lost its main event producer but the venue itself. “We confirm that we will not be moving forward with Watkins Glen as a venue for Woodstock 50,” Gregory Peck, a managing organizer of the festival, told CNN. “We are in discussions with another venue to host Woodstock 50 on August 16th-18th and look forward to sharing the new location when tickets go on sale in the coming weeks.
These issues that are plaguing Woodstock 50 also conjure another type of déjà vu, considering it’s not the first time a Woodstock revival has gone horribly wrong. Back in the late ’90s, Woodstock ’99 was meant to celebrate the festival’s 30th anniversary in Rome, New York; it was met with overcrowding, a water shortage, a fiery-hot tarmac that almost burned guests alive, and multiple fires, including vehicles that were flipped over and set ablaze.
