In the summer of 2005, I met a woman, Laura M., whose life had been upended by cancer. She wasn’t sick: What haunted her was anxiety about cancer in her future. Three years earlier, Laura had been diagnosed with a primary tumor in her breast that was small and localized. She had surgery, radiation and chemotherapy—the standard protocol—and then came to see me, an oncologist, to help manage her future care. I suggested doing nothing: She had likely been cured.
