PITTSBURGH — Dodgers catcher Will Smith could be close to returning from his concussion with this weekend “a possibility” and Saturday most likely.
On Tuesday, Smith caught Dustin May’s between-starts bullpen session and then caught some of the Dodgers relievers when they warmed up to go in the game. Wednesday afternoon, the Dodgers brought in a minor league pitcher to throw live batting practice to Smith and Miguel Rojas . They plan to do the same for the two injured players Friday afternoon at Dodger Stadium, potentially a final step before Smith is activated.
“Yeah. We thought it was just a very minor concussion, which I think it was just a minor concussion,” Smith said. “But just the headache lasted awhile. It’s a concussion, you don’t want to rush back and just want to play that one safe.”“I definitely wanna make sure before I catch again that my brain can take another foul tip because that’s the nature of being a catcher,” he said. “That’s gonna happen. So it just kind of is that unknown really. You don’t know exactly when you’re totally good.
“Our thought right now is for him to go out on a couple day rehab assignment, take some at-bats and hopefully, potentially be ready to go on Monday,” Roberts said. Both Max Muncy and Brusdar Graterol are expected to rejoin the Dodgers from the paternity list on Friday when they start a homestand against the St. Louis Cardinals.
